The Shanghai Marathon is a road race held in Shanghai, China, featuring a full marathon, a mini-run, and a wheelchair category, all sanctioned by AIMS and rated Platinum Label by World Athletics. The full marathon and mini marathon begin around 7:00 am, offering an early-morning start that takes advantage of cooler temperatures and spans major city thoroughfares.
Runners start at the Bund Bull Plaza along the historic Huangpu River skyline, then continue through iconic areas such as Nanjing Road pedestrian street, Jing’an Temple, Huaihai Road, Xintiandi, Longteng Avenue, and Longhua Road, before finishing at Xujiahui Sports Park in Xuhui District. The single-loop course is primarily flat, favoured by athletes seeking a personal best or destination marathon with scenic urban appeal.
The race attracts tens of thousands of participants and has a selective entry process reflecting its popularity among international runners. Registration includes timing, aid stations, medical support, and finisher medals.
Beyond the race itself, visitors can enjoy tourism opportunities in Shanghai, including the Bund promenade, Yu Garden, the former French Concession, the historic Jing’an temple, and the modern skyline of Pudong. With its blend of elite athletic performance, riverside running, and landmark sightseeing, the Shanghai Marathon offers a top-tier destination racing experience in China.
