The Big Sur International Marathon is a premier destination race in California, on the West Coast of the United States, renowned for its stunning coastal route and challenge. The certified course begins in the redwood forests south of Big Sur and ends in Carmel, tracing scenic Highway 1, the nation’s first designated scenic highway.
It includes sections framed by tall redwoods, rolling hills to Hurricane Point, and ocean views along the Pacific. The halfway point features the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge, where a pianist performs mid-race. The route is USATF and World Athletics certified, and serves as a Boston qualifier. Participants must complete the course within a six-hour limit due to road reopening requirements.
The event attracts around 4,500 participants with support services such as chip timing, aid stations, pacing groups, medical teams, and transport logistics. Live music and cultural performers—like samba dancers and taiko drummers—add energy along the course, notably near scenic overlooks.
As a travel-friendly race, Big Sur pairs endurance running with California tourism. Runners can explore nearby attractions such as Pebble Beach and its famous golf courses, the coastal art town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, and wildlife-rich sites like Elkhorn Slough. The region’s 17-Mile Drive, scenic ocean viewing points, and charming Monterey Bay venues make it ideal for combining athletic performance with coastal sightseeing.
